आ जीवनास्तात् प्रणयाः

आ जीवनास्तात् प्रणयाः कोपास्तत्क्षणभङ्गुराः।
परित्यागाश्च निःसङ्ग भवन्ति हि महात्मनाम्॥
ā jīvanāstāt praṇayāḥ kopāstatkṣaṇabhaṅgurāḥ|
parityāgāśca niḥsaṅga bhavanti hi mahātmanām||
Friendship [with noble persons] lasts for the lifetime; anger is transitory and lasts for a moment only;
They have no desire for wealth, the noble persons.

भक्त्या हि तुष्यन्ति महानुभावाः

अपां निधिं वारिभिरर्चयन्ति
दीपेन सूर्यं प्रतिबोधयन्ति।
ताभ्यां तयोः किं परिपूर्णता स्याद्
भक्त्या हि तुष्यन्ति महानुभावाः॥
apāṁ nidhiṁ vāribhirarcayanti
dīpena sūryaṁ pratibodhayanti|
tābhyāṁ tayoḥ kiṁ paripūrṇatā syād
bhaktyā hi tuṣyanti mahānubhāvāḥ||
People worship the lord of waters (ocean) by offering (consecrated) water to him
and wave lights before the sun (to illumine him).
Do these two things enhance their fullness?
Great people are indeed pleased by devotion.

मानो हि महतां धनम्‌

उत्तमा मानमिच्छन्ति धनमानौ हि मध्यमाः।
अधमा धनमिच्छन्ति मानो हि महतां धनम्‌॥
uttamā mānamicchanti dhanamānau hi madhyamāḥ |
adhamā dhanamicchanti māno hi mahatāṁ dhanam ||
Best of the men seek honour; the mediocre seek wealth and honour.
Those in bottom (inferior) seek [only] wealth. Honour is wealth to great men.

प्रारभ्य च उत्तमजनाः न परित्यजन्ति

प्रारभ्यते न खलु विघ्नभयेन नीचैः
प्रारभ्य च विघ्नविहताः विरमन्ति मध्याः।
विघ्नैः पुनः पुनरपि प्रतिहन्यमानाः
प्रारभ्य च उत्तमजनाः न परित्यजन्ति॥
— भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतकम्
prārabhyate na khalu vighnabhayena nīcaiḥ
prārabhya ca vighnavihatāḥ viramanti madhyāḥ|
vighnaiḥ punaḥ punarapi pratihanyamānāḥ
prārabhya ca uttamajanāḥ na parityajanti||
— bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatakam
Inferior people do not start (an endeavour) out of fear for obstacles;
Mediocres, having started, retract on being fazed with obstacles
Even though they are repeatedly attacked with obstacles;
The superior people, having undertaken (something), never give up!

वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्

अयं निजो परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्।
उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्॥
ayaṁ nijo paro veti gaṇanā laghucetasām|
udāracaritānāṁ tu vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam||

The small-minded count "this is mine and that is someone else's";
For the men of great character, the whole world is their family!
