साक्षराः विपरीताश्चेत्

साक्षराः विपरीताश्चेत् राक्षसाः एव केवलम्।
सरसो विपरीतश्चेत् सरसत्वं न मुञ्चति॥
sākṣarāḥ viparītāścet rākṣasāḥ eva kevalam|
saraso viparītaścet sarasatvaṁ na muñcati||
If [the word] sākṣarā (literate, i.e. learned people) is inverted, it becomes rākṣasā (devil).
[But] if [the word] sarasa (good, i.e. good people) is inverted, it remains sarasa!

Therefore, one must be both  sākṣarā and sarasa.

लोकनाथावुभावपि

अहं च त्वं च राजेन्द्र लोकनाथावुभावपि।
बहुव्रीहिरहं राजन् षष्ठीतत्पुरुषो भवान्॥
ahaṁ ca tvaṁ ca rājendra lokanāthāvubhāvapi|
bahuvrīhirahaṁ rājan ṣaṣṭhītatpuruṣo bhavān||
Me and you, Oh King, are both ‘lokanāthā’.
[Only that] I am bahuvrīhi [samās] (लोकं नाथः यस्य सः — one whose guardian is the loka (people)), while you are ṣaṣṭhī tatpuruṣa [samās] (लोकस्य नाथः — one who guards the world, i.e. king).

कः खगौघाङ्चिच्छौजा झाञ्ज्ञौटौठीडडण्ढणः।
तथोदधीन् पफर्बाभीर्मायोरिल्वाशिषां सहः॥
kaḥ khagaughāṅcicchaujā jhāñjñauṭauṭhīḍaḍaṇḍhaṇaḥ |
tathodadhīn papharbābhīrmāyorilvāśiśiṣāṁ sahaḥ ||

"Who is he, the lover of birds, pure in intelligence, expert in stealing the strength of others, leader among the destroyers of the enemies, the steadfast, the fearless, the one who filled the ocean? He is the king Maya, the repository of the blessings that can destroy the foes."

Note that all the consonants are in order!!!

तव गुणानां ईश पारं न याति

असितगिरिसमं स्यात्‌ कज्जलं सिन्धु पात्रं
सुरतरुवरशाखा लेखनी पत्रमुर्वी।
लिखति यदि गृहीत्वा शारदा सर्वकालं
तदापि तव गुणानां ईश पारं न याति॥
asitagirisamaṁ syāt kajjalaṁ sindhu pātraṁ
surataruvaraśākhā lekhanī patramurvī |
likhati yadi gṛhītvā śāradā sarvakālaṁ
tadāpi tava guṇānāṁ īśa pāraṁ na yāti ||

"The ink may be like a black mountain, the sea – inkpot;
a branch of the tree of gods [as] pen, and the whole earth [as] paper.
If Goddess Sarasvati (Sharada) writes for all the time using all this material
Even then, O Lord, she will not complete describing your attributes."

शिवस्तुति - चाटुश्लोकाः

स्वयं पञ्चमुखः पुत्रौ गजाननषडाननौ।
दिगम्बरः कथं जीवेत्‌ अन्नपूर्णा न चेद्गृहे॥
svayaṁ pañcamukhaḥ putrau gajānanaṣaḍānanau |
digambaraḥ kathaṁ jīvet annapūrṇā na cedgṛhe ||

"Five-mouthed himself , and sons the elephant-faced (गणेशः elephant-mouthed) and the six-faced (कार्तिकः, six-mouthed). How would Shiva (दिगम्बरः) survive if Annapurna (पार्वती) was not at home?"

पार्वती फणि बालेन्दु भस्म मन्दाकिनी युता।
अपवर्ग प्रदा मूर्तिः कथं स्यात्‌ तव शंकर॥
pārvatī phaṇi bālendu bhasma mandākinī yutā |
apavarga pradā mūrtiḥ kathaṁ syāt tava śaṁkara ||

"Shiva ! Your form is full of pa varga (पार्वती फणि बालेन्दु भस्म मन्दाकिनी).
How shall that form be the bestower of apavarga (मोक्ष)?
[He is known to be the bestower of मोक्ष but how can he give that?]"

पिनाक फणि बालेन्दु भस्म मन्दाकिनी युता।
प वर्ग रचिता मूर्तिः अपवर्ग प्रदास्तु नः॥
pināka phaṇi bālendu bhasma mandākinī yutā |
pa varga racitā mūrtiḥ apavarga pradāstu naḥ ||

"Equipped with a spear, snake, the crescent of the moon, ashes and the ganga
May this idol composed from the 'pa varga' (the consonants प फ ब भ म) lead us to heaven (अपवर्ग)."

देवानां नन्दनो

देवानां नन्दनो देवो नोदनो वेद-निन्दिनाम्।
दिवं दुदाव नादेन दाने दानव-नन्दिनः॥
devānāṁ nandano devo nodano veda-nindinām |
divaṁ dudāva nādena dāne dānava-nandinaḥ ||

"The God (Vishnu) who causes pleasure to the other gods and pain to the opponents of the vedas, filled the heavens with a loud sound as he killed Hiranyakashipu [a demon who forbade his son to take the name of Vishnu.]"

Note that only three consonants of 33 — द न व — are used!

किं वाससा

किं वाससा इत्यत्र विचारणीयं
वासः प्रधानं खलु योग्यतायै।
पीताम्बरं वीक्ष्य ददौ स्वकन्यां
दिगम्बरं वीक्ष्य विषं समुद्रः॥
kiṁ vāsasā ityatra vicāraṇīyaṁ
vāsaḥ pradhānaṁ khalu yogyatāyai |
pītāmbaraṁ vīkṣya dadau svakanyāṁ
digambaraṁ vīkṣya viṣaṁ samudraḥ ||

""What's in one's dress" — is a point for contemplation;
apparel is indeed important for appropriateness;
Looking at the one dressed in bright yellow clothes (Mahavishnu), the ocean gave him his daughter;
seeing the one dressed in nothing (Lord Shiva) it gave him poison!"

अगजाननपद्मार्कं गजाननमहर्निशं

अगजाननपद्मार्कं गजाननमहर्निशं।
अनेकदन्तं भक्तानाम् एकदन्तमुपास्महे॥
agajānanapadmārkaṁ gajānanamaharniśaṁ|
anekadantaṁ bhaktānām ekadantamupāsmahe||

Identify the contrasting words used and appreciate the beauty of poetry. The following is the 'split' version to aid in understanding!

अगजायाः आननपद्मार्कं गजाननम् अहर्निशं।
अनेकदं तं भक्तानाम् एकदन्तम् उपास्महे॥
agajāyāḥ ānanapadmārkaṁ gajānanam aharniśaṁ|
anekadaṁ taṁ bhaktānām ekadantam upāsmahe||

उपमा कालिदासस्य

जम्बू फलानि पक्वानि पतन्ति विमले जले।
कपिकम्पितशाखाभ्यः गुलुगुगुलुगुग्गुलु॥

jambū phalāni pakvāni patanti vimale jale|
kapikampitaśākhābhyaḥ guluguguluguggulu||

This is an interesting one. It is believed that महाकवि कालिदास was once challenged by भोजराज to fabricate a poem that would rhyme with गुलुगुगुलुगुग्गुलु! To which कालिदास promptly composed the beautiful verse above, which refers to the falling of ripe jamun fruits into clear water, from branches shaken by monkeys, causing the sound of गुलुगुगुलुगुग्गुलु (splashing).

No wonder (though this by no means is any ample proof of the genius of the महाकवि), it was once said that:
पुरा कवीनां गणना प्रसङ्गे कनिष्ठिकाधितिष्ठित कालिदासः।
अद्यापि तत्तुल्य कवेराभावात् अनामिका सार्थवती बभूव॥
purā kavīnāṁ gaṇanā prasaṅge kaniṣṭhikadhitiṣṭhita kālidāsaḥ|
adyāpi tattulya kaverābhāvāat anāmikā sārthavatī babhūva||

"Long ago, when the best poets were being counted, they started with कालिदास, on the little finger. Even today, due to the lack of equal poets to his stature, the ring finger remains अनामिका, or 'unnamed'! 'उपमा कालिदासस्य'(simile belongs to Kalidasa)!"
