सङ्ग्रहैकपरः प्रायः

सङ्ग्रहैकपरः प्रायः समुद्रोऽपि रसातले।
दातरं जलदं पश्य गर्जन्तं भुवनोपरि॥
saṅgrahaikaparaḥ prāyaḥ samudro’pi rasātale|
dātaraṁ jaladaṁ paśya garjantaṁ bhuvanopari||
The sea which is only collecting water and not giving to anyone is at a very low level
See the clouds which give water thunder from above the Earth.

दानोपभोगरहिता

दानोपभोगरहिता दिवसा यस्य यान्ति वै।
स लोहकारभस्त्रेव श्वसन्नपि न जीवति॥
dānopabhogarahitā divasā yasya yānti vai|
sa lohakārabhastreva śvasannapi na jīvati||
A person who passes his day without donations and enjoyments
Is like a blacksmith’s bellows; he breathes but does not live.

अनर्थितर्पणं वित्तं

अनर्थितर्पणं वित्तं चित्तमध्यानदर्पणम्।
अतीर्थसर्पणं देहं पर्यन्ते शोच्यतां व्रजेत्॥
anarthitarpaṇaṁ vittaṁ cittamadhyānadarpaṇam|
atīrthasarpaṇaṁ dehaṁ paryante śocyatāṁ vrajet||
Wealth which does not help the needy, and a mind which is proud without meditation
A body which moves not towards a holy place (in pilgrimage) come to grief at the end.

चत्वाराः सहजागुणाः

दातृत्वं प्रियवक्तृत्वं धीरत्वमुचितज्ञता।
अभ्यासेन न लभ्यन्ते चत्वाराः सहजागुणाः॥
dātṛtvaṁ priyavaktṛtvaṁ dhīratvamucitajñatā |
abhyāsena na labhyante catvārāḥ sahajāguṇāḥ ||
Liberality, sweetness of speech, courage and judgement are the
four natural qualities, which can not be attained by practice.
They come naturally.

कृपणेन समो दाता

कृपणेन समो दाता न भूतो न भविष्यति।
अस्पृशन्नेव वित्तानि यः परेभ्यः प्रयच्छति॥

There is none equal in generosity as a miser, there was not in the past, will not be in the future; (for he) without even touching his wealth, hands all his possessions to others.

दाता लक्षेषु जायते

शतेषु जायते शूरः सहस्रेषु च पण्डितः।
वक्ता दशसहस्रेषु दाता लक्षेषु जायते॥
śateṣu jāyate śūraḥ sahasreṣu ca paṇḍitaḥ|
vaktā daśasahasreṣu dātā lakṣeṣu jāyate||
"A brave man is born among hundred persons; a learned scholar, among thousand.
A great orator is one among ten thousand, [but a] great generous donor, one in a lakh!"

न मातुः परदैवतम्

नान्नोदकसमं दानं तिथिर्नैकादशी समा।
न गायत्र्याः परो मन्त्रः न मातुः परदैवतम्॥
nānnodakasamaṁ dānaṁ tithirnaikādaśī samā|
na gāyatryāḥ paro mantraḥ na mātuḥ paradaivatam||
There are no alms that are equivalent to that of grain and water; there is no day (thithi) equivalent to Ekadashi. There is no mantra superior to Gayatri mantra and there is no God superior to one's mother

दातव्यं भोक्तव्यं धनविषये

दातव्यं भोक्तव्यं धनविषये सञ्चयो न कर्तव्यः।
पश्येह मधुकरीणां सञ्चितार्थं हरन्त्यन्ये॥
dātavyaṁ bhoktavyaṁ dhanaviṣaye sañcayo na kartavyaḥ|
paśyeha madhukarīṇāṁ sañcitārthaṁ harantyanye||

[Money] should be given away or enjoyed [and spent] but never stocked up.
Look here, the collected savings of the bees [honey] is stolen by others.

दानं भोगो नाशस्तिस्रो गतयो भवन्ति वित्तस्य।
यो न ददाति न भुङ्क्ते तस्य तृतीय गतिर्भवति॥६४॥
— भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतकम्

dānaṁ bhogo nāśastisro gatayo bhavanti vittasya|
yo na dadāti na bhuṅkte tasya tṛtīya gatirbhavati||64||
— bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatakam

Being given away, enjoyed, destroyed: these are the three (possible) states for (one’s) possessions.
What is neither given away nor enjoyed, that takes the third course (of destruction).

श्रोत्रं श्रुतेनैव

श्रोत्रं श्रुतेनैव न कुण्डलेन दानेन पाणिर्न तु कङ्कणेन।
विभाति कायः करुणापराणां परोपकारैर्न तु चन्दनेन॥
śrotraṁ śrutenaiva na kuṇḍalena dānena pāṇirna tu kaṅkaṇena|
vibhāti kāyaḥ karuṇāparāṇāṁ paropakārairna tu candanena||

"Ears are [adorned] by listening to scriptures, not by earrings; hands are [adorned] by charity, not by bracelets. Similarly, the body is adorned by doing good to others and not by [smearing] sandalwood."

अन्नदानं परं दानं

अन्नदानं परं दानं विद्या दानम् अतः परम्।
अन्नेन क्षणिका तृप्तिः यावज्जीवञ्च विद्यया॥
annadānaṁ paraṁ dānaṁ vidyā dānam ataḥ param|
annena kṣaṇikā tṛptiḥ yāvajjīvañca vidyayā||

"The offering of food is great; the offering of education is even greater.
While food satisfies only momentarily, education satisfies during the entire course of life."

गौरवं प्राप्यते दानात्‌

गौरवं प्राप्यते दानात्‌ न तु वित्तस्य संचयात्‌।
स्थितिः उच्चैः पयोदानां पयोधीनां अधः स्थितिः॥
gauravaṁ prāpyate dānāt na tu vittasya saṁcayāt |
sthitiḥ uccaiḥ payodānāṁ payodhīnāṁ adhaḥ sthitiḥ ||

Fame is obtained by giving money, not collecting it;
Clouds (givers of water) have a high position whereas the seas (storers of water) have a low position.
