दातव्यं भोक्तव्यं धनविषये

दातव्यं भोक्तव्यं धनविषये सञ्चयो न कर्तव्यः।
पश्येह मधुकरीणां सञ्चितार्थं हरन्त्यन्ये॥
dātavyaṁ bhoktavyaṁ dhanaviṣaye sañcayo na kartavyaḥ|
paśyeha madhukarīṇāṁ sañcitārthaṁ harantyanye||

[Money] should be given away or enjoyed [and spent] but never stocked up.
Look here, the collected savings of the bees [honey] is stolen by others.

दानं भोगो नाशस्तिस्रो गतयो भवन्ति वित्तस्य।
यो न ददाति न भुङ्क्ते तस्य तृतीय गतिर्भवति॥६४॥
— भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतकम्

dānaṁ bhogo nāśastisro gatayo bhavanti vittasya|
yo na dadāti na bhuṅkte tasya tṛtīya gatirbhavati||64||
— bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatakam

Being given away, enjoyed, destroyed: these are the three (possible) states for (one’s) possessions.
What is neither given away nor enjoyed, that takes the third course (of destruction).

न निश्चितार्थाद्विरमन्ति धीराः

रत्नैर्महार्हैस्तुतुषुर्न देवा न भेजिरे भीम-विषेण भीतिम्।
सुधां विना न परयुर्विरामं न निश्चितार्थाद्विरमन्ति धीराः॥
— भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतकम्
ratnairmahārhaistutuṣurna devā na bhejire bhīma-viṣeṇa bhītim |
sudhāṁ vinā na parayurvirāmaṁ na niścitārthādviramanti dhīrāḥ||
— bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatakam
“The Gods were not satiated by the immensely valued jewels [during the churning of the ocean]; Nor were they deterred by the terrible poison [that came forth]. Without nectar, rest they did not; the resolute do not abandon the [set] goal [ever].

तेजसां हि न वयः समीक्ष्यते

सिंहः शिशुरपि निपतति मद मलिन कपोल भित्तिषु गजेषु।
प्रकृतिरियं सत्त्ववतां तेजसां हि न वयः समीक्ष्यते॥३८॥
— भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतकम्
siṁhaḥ śiśurapi nipatati mada malina kapola bhittiṣu gajeṣu|
prakṛtiriyaṁ sattvavatāṁ tejasāṁ hi na vayaḥ samīkṣyate||38||
— bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatakam

The lion, even when a cub, attacks jumps upon the cheek of an intoxicated elephant.
It is indeed the nature of the courageous : the age of the glorious ones is never relevant.

न खलु वयस्तेजसो हेतुः
na khalu vayastejaso hetuḥ

बालस्यापि रवेः पादाः पतन्त्युपरि भूभृतां।
तेजसा सह जातानां वयः कुत्रोपयुज्यते॥
bālasyāpi raveḥ pādāḥ patantyupari bhūbhṛtāṁ |
tejasā saha jātānāṁ vayaḥ kutropayujyate ||

Even the feet of a young sun can fall on the top of mountains.
For those born with brilliance, where indeed is age used.

कुसुमस्तबकस्येव

कुसुमस्तबकस्येव द्वयीवृत्तिर्मनस्विनः।
मूर्ध्नि वा सर्वलोकस्य विशीर्येत वनेऽथवा॥३३॥
— भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतकम्
kusumastabakasyeva dvayīvṛttirmanasvinaḥ|
mūrdhni vā sarvalokasya viśīryeta vane’thavā||33||
— bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatakam

“Like a bunch of flowers, great men have two ways.
They are either on top of everyone, or decay unnoticed in the forest.”

प्रारभ्य च उत्तमजनाः न परित्यजन्ति

प्रारभ्यते न खलु विघ्नभयेन नीचैः
प्रारभ्य च विघ्नविहताः विरमन्ति मध्याः।
विघ्नैः पुनः पुनरपि प्रतिहन्यमानाः
प्रारभ्य च उत्तमजनाः न परित्यजन्ति॥
— भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतकम्
prārabhyate na khalu vighnabhayena nīcaiḥ
prārabhya ca vighnavihatāḥ viramanti madhyāḥ|
vighnaiḥ punaḥ punarapi pratihanyamānāḥ
prārabhya ca uttamajanāḥ na parityajanti||
— bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatakam
Inferior people do not start (an endeavour) out of fear for obstacles;
Mediocres, having started, retract on being fazed with obstacles
Even though they are repeatedly attacked with obstacles;
The superior people, having undertaken (something), never give up!

निन्दन्तु नीतिनिपुणाः

निन्दन्तु नीतिनिपुणाः यदि वा स्तुवन्तु
लक्ष्मीः समाविशतु गच्छतु वा यथेष्टम्।
अद्यैव वा मरणमस्तु युगान्तरे वा
न्याय्यात्पथः प्रविचलन्ति पदं न धीराः॥
— भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतकम्
nindantu nītinipuṇāḥ yadi vā stuvantu
lakṣmīḥ āgacchatu gacchatu vā yatheṣṭam|
adyaiva maraṇamastu yugāantare vā
nyāyyātpathaḥ pravicalanti padaṁ na dhīrāḥ||
— bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatakam

“May those proficient in law praise or decry;
May the Goddess of Wealth come or go as she pleases;
Let Death come today or at the end of the yuga;
The resolute will not deviate from the path of righteousness!”
