मरणान्तानि वैराणि

मरणान्तानि वैराणि निर्वृत्तं नः प्रयोजनम्।
क्रियतामस्य संस्कारो ममाप्येष यथा तव॥९९-३९॥
—श्रीमद्वाल्मीकिरामयणे युद्धकाण्डः
maraṇāntāni vairāṇi nirvṛttaṁ naḥ prayojanam |
kriyatāmasya saṁskāro mamāpyeṣa yathā tava ||99-39||
—śrīmadvālmīkirāmayaṇe yuddhakāṇḍaḥ
Enmity ends with death; it is of no use to desist
Perform his last rites; He’s [now] mine (my brother) as is yours.

  2. Google for “maranantani vairani” and you get some hits from sanskritdocuments page, where it is given as ‘naH prayojanam’. I am not too sure. Do you have a printed copy of Ramayana (Gorakhpur Press)? I have one in Chennai, which I could get checked…

    Yes, Rama says this to Vibhishana, when Vibhishana resists from doing the last rites for his sinner brother.

      With respect, I would like to revise it a bit : Mama Sangrahe, Shreewalmeeki-wirachitam ‘Raamaayanam Asti, Saayamkaale Grhe Gatwaa drasthum ichhaamahe or Ichhaami (depending upon whether the root ‘Ichh’ were to be an aatmanepadee or a Parasmaipadee one ). Noun Ramayan is neuter gender therefore, Nominative singular’ therefore; Ramayanam, like Jnanam, Daanam etc. If Ramaayanam were to be masculine then the grammatical form would have been Raamaayana(h) as in Dewa(h), Raam(h) etc. ‘ Grham’ again, is accusitive case, singular form. the correct form to be used would be the locative case – singular. Grhe as in Saayankaale.

  4. अयं श्लोकः युद्ध-काण्डे नवाधिकशतमे सर्गे अस्ति| तस्य सर्गस्य अन्तिमः श्लोकः अस्ति च|
    भवान् श्लोकं सम्यग् अलिखत् किन्तु कदाचित् निवृत्तं नः प्रयोजनम् इति वाक्यस्य अनुवादः अस्ति – Our purpose has been fulfilled. नः इति अस्माकं इति अर्थे प्रयुक्तम्|

  5. I suppose the translation of the first part of the shloka can be: From death the purpose of our this enmity is finished.
    मरणात् – पञ्चमी; तानि वैराणि – प्रथमा (कर्ता) प्रयोजनम् – प्रथमा (कर्ता); नः – षष्ठी

  6. I would think मरणान्तानि is not a सन्धि, but a समास, in which case, the meaning would differ. kind of – मरणॆ अन्तं — मरणान्तम् ,तानि मरणान्तानि — those which end in (with) death, i.e. enmity ends with death.
