गृहीत इव केशेषु मृत्युना

अजरामरवत् प्राज्ञो विद्यामर्थं च साधयेत्।
गृहीत इव केशेषु मृत्युना धर्मम् आचरेत्॥
ajarāmaravat prājño vidyāmarthaṁ ca sādhayet|
gṛhīta iva keśeṣu mṛtyunā dharmam ācaret||
The learned should acquire knowledge and wealth, as though there is no death or old age.
But, they should follow dharma as though, they have been gripped by Death by the hair!

धिगर्थः कष्टसंश्रयः

अर्थानाम् अर्जने दुःखं अर्जितानां च रक्षणम्।
नाशे दुःखं व्यये दुःखं धिगर्थः कष्टसंश्रयः॥
— मित्रभेदः नाम प्रथमे तन्त्रे देवशर्मा-परिव्राजक कथा ४
arthānām arjane duḥkhaṁ arjitānāṁ ca rakṣaṇam|
nāśe duḥkhaṁ vyaye duḥkhaṁ dhigarthaḥ kaṣṭasaṁśrayaḥ||
— mitrabhedaḥ nāma prathame tantre devaśarmā-parivrājaka kathā 4
The earning of wealth is difficult; it is difficult to protect the earned wealth [too].
On loss, it begets sadness; on spending, it begets sadness; Everywhere, wealth brings trouble

क्षणे नष्टे कुतो विद्या

क्षणशः कणशश्चैव विद्यामर्थञ्च साधयेत्।
क्षणे नष्टे कुतो विद्या कणे नष्टे कुतो धनम्॥
kṣaṇaśaḥ kaṇaśaścaiva vidyāmarthañca sādhayet|
kṣaṇe naṣṭe kuto vidyā kaṇe naṣṭe kuto dhanam||
Every moment one should learn and from every bit one should earn.
If a moment is wasted, where is knowledge [acquired] and if even a bit is wasted, where is wealth.

अनर्थाश्चार्थरूपेण

अनर्थाश्चार्थरूपेण अर्थाश्चानर्थरूपतः।
अर्थायैव हि केषाञ्चिद् धननाशो भवत्युत॥
anarthāścārtharūpeṇa arthāścānartharūpataḥ|
arthāyaiva hi keṣāñcid dhananāśo bhavatyuta||
Loss appears in the form of profit, and profit in the form of loss;
The loss of property, for some [people], proves to be a profit!

स्वजनोऽपि शत्रुः

अदृष्टपूर्वा बहवः सहायाः सर्वे पदस्थस्य भवन्ति वश्याः।
अर्थाद्विहीनस्य पदच्युतस्य भवन्ति काले स्वजनोऽपि शत्रुः॥
adṛṣṭapūrvā bahavaḥ sahāyāḥ sarve padasthasya bhavanti vaśyāḥ|
arthādvihīnasya padacyutasya bhavanti kāle svajano’pi śatruḥ||
When a man is powerful and prosperous, friends gather around him from all directions;
If he is poor and out of work, then even his own people turn foes in the time of need.
