rājā paśyati karṇābhyāṁ dhiyā paśyanti paṇḍitāḥ |
paśuḥ paśyati gandhena bhūte paśyanti barbarāḥ ||
The administrator perceives by his ears, the learned by their intellect;
An animal perceives by scent and fools by the past.

labheta sikatāsu tailamapi yatnataḥ pīḍayan
pibecca mṛgatṛṣṇikāsu salilaṁ pipāsārditaḥ|
kadācidapi paryaṭan śaśaviṣāṇamāsādayet
na tu pratiniviṣṭamūrkhajanacittamārādhayet||
[One can, perhaps] extract oil by squeezing sand;
[one could] quench his thirst by drinking water from a mirage;
During travel one may even find the horns of a hare;
But it is impossible to please a conceited fool.

apṛṣṭvaiva bhavenmūḍha jñānaṁ manasi cintanāt|
apūrṇaḥ kurute śabdaṁ na pūrṇaḥ kurute ghaṭaḥ||
One becomes a fool not by questioning; wisdom comes from deep thinking.
A vessel, not full, makes noise, but not one that is full.

apradātā samṛddho’sau daridraśca mahāmanāḥ|
aśrutaśca samunnaddhastamāhurmūḍhacetasam||
One who does not help others, though prosperous; one who is poor, but generous
One who is ignorant but proud — these are said to be fools.

api mānuṣyakaṁ labdhvā bhavanti jñānino na ye|
paśutaiva varā teṣāṁ pratyavāyāpravartanāt||
If, even after having acquired human birth those who do not become truly wise,
It is better they are born as beasts; for then they will do no mischief to others.

upadeśaḥ hi mūrkhāṇāṁ prakopāya na śāntaye|
payaḥ pānaṁ bhujaṅgānāṁ kevalaṁ viṣavardhanam||
Advising an idiot leads to more aggravation than peace. Feeding milk to a snake only serves to increase its poison.

alpakāryakarāḥ santi ye narā bahubhāṣiṇaḥ|
śaratkālinameghāste nūnaṁ garjanti kevalaṁ||

"Men who talk too much do little work;
The are like the autumn clouds, that only roar!"

sampūrṇakumbho na karoti śabdaṁ
ardho ghaṭo ghoṣamupaiti nūnaṁ |
vidvān kulīno na karoti garvaṁ
mūḍhāstu jalpanti guṇairvihīnāḥ ||

"A full pot does not make any noise;
However a half full pot really makes noise.
A learned respectable person is never vain;
but foolish people bereft of good qualities babble incessantly."

"Empty vessels make much noise!"
