kāvyaśāstravinodena kālo gacchati dhīmatam|
vyasanena ca mūrkhāṇāṁ nidrayā kalahena vā||
Intelligent people (dhīmān) spend their time studying the literature and shastras.
The dumb people (mūrkhāḥ) spend (waste) their time in sleeping and quarrels!

rājā paśyati karṇābhyāṁ dhiyā paśyanti paṇḍitāḥ |
paśuḥ paśyati gandhena bhūte paśyanti barbarāḥ ||
The administrator perceives by his ears, the learned by their intellect;
An animal perceives by scent and fools by the past.

divyaṁ cūtaphalaṁ prāpya na garvaṁ yāti kokilaḥ |
pītvā kardamapānīyaṁ bheko baka-bakāyate ||
The cuckoo has no pride in the possession of a delicious mango
Whereas a frog will be croaking by a gulp of muddy water.

śakyo vārayituṁ jalena hutabhuk chatreṇa sūryātapaḥ
nāgendro niśitāṅkuśeṇa samado dantena gaurgardabhaḥ |
vyādhiḥ bheṣajasaṅgrahaiśca vividhairmantraprayogairviṣam
sarvasyauṣadhamasti śāstravihitaṁ mūrkhasya nāstyauṣadham ||
It is possible to prevent fire with water, heat of the sun with an umbrella,
A strong elephant with a sharp goad, a bull or donkey with a stick,
A disease with a concotion of medicines, and poison by the use of various mantras.
For everything there is a remedy provided in the scriptures but there is no remedy for a fool.

labheta sikatāsu tailamapi yatnataḥ pīḍayan
pibecca mṛgatṛṣṇikāsu salilaṁ pipāsārditaḥ|
kadācidapi paryaṭan śaśaviṣāṇamāsādayet
na tu pratiniviṣṭamūrkhajanacittamārādhayet||
[One can, perhaps] extract oil by squeezing sand;
[one could] quench his thirst by drinking water from a mirage;
During travel one may even find the horns of a hare;
But it is impossible to please a conceited fool.

upadeśaḥ hi mūrkhāṇāṁ prakopāya na śāntaye|
payaḥ pānaṁ bhujaṅgānāṁ kevalaṁ viṣavardhanam||
Advising an idiot leads to more aggravation than peace. Feeding milk to a snake only serves to increase its poison.
